Therefore do not worry about tomorrow,
for tomorrow will worry about its own things.
Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. (Mt 6:34)
Most of our worries are ill timed.
Worries about the past are pointless. We cannot change what has happened. We must seek forgiveness (1Jn 1:9), we ought to learn from the past, but them we must forget the past and press ahead (Phil 3:13). Minutes and hours spent worrying about and wishing we could undo our past failures are wasted minutes. Such past worries are often the breeding ground for satan’s condemnation. Wise is the person who deals with the past and moves on.
Worries about the future are wasted. Most of the things we worry about for the future don’t happen. Such time and energy spent on these future worries are truly pointless.
Jesus commands us not to worry about tomorrow.
Jesus promises us a daily supply of strength. To those who are His – Jesus tells us He will meet us with a daily supply of what we need. In fact, it is this that we are to pray for.
Give us day by day our daily bread. (Lk 11:3)
Like the manna God provided for the children of Israel in the Old Testament – God promises to meet our needs. Yesterday’s manna is not meant for today – nor could you keep it in reserve. Each day – you had to seek that days supply from God. What a powerful picture of how God wants to meet you today.
God has not given us a supply of strength for tomorrows troubles, but He has given it for today’s. If you waist your days and strength worrying about the past or the future – you are spending the strength that He has given you today – that was meant for today.
Christian, the call is to be fully living – today. Not consumed but the past or overwhelmed by the future – but just seeking to draw on the Lord for His strength to handle today and whatever is there. I promise you this – God is faithful – and He will provide the strength you need for today.
This I recall to my mind, Therefore I have hope.
Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed,
Because His compassions fail not.
They are new every morning;
Great is Your faithfulness. (La 3:21-23)
