in everything give thanks;

for this is the will of God

in Christ Jesus for you. (1 Th 5:18)

Giving thanks is important!

Tomorrow, as a nation – we celebrate the holiday of Thanksgiving.  As we do so, it seems wise for Christians to stop and consider how important being thankful is.

Giving thanks is a command from the Lord.  It is not an optional part of the Christian life, but actually a key need.

Giving thanks is what God wants for us – as it says above – it is His will for us.   God wants us to be and to take time to give thanks.

Not giving thanks – is opposite God and His ways.  It is interesting to note that as God describes a corrupt culture in Romans 1 – one of the key aspects – is that they are not a thankful people.

because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God,

nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts,

and their foolish hearts were darkened. (Ro 1:21)

I want to give you a challenge for this Thanksgiving holiday, something to ponder.  I ask you to take time, to honestly seek to answer these two questions for all of us…but also just for you.

First, what makes the lack of giving thanks so dangerous, so destructive?

Second, what makes giving thanks to God so helpful, and so needed?

With that, can I again put before you this thought – giving thanks is commanded by the Lord.  O, it is true that we may not be able to give thanks FOR everything, but IN everything we can give thanks.  No matter what you situation is right now, there is a place and a call to give thanks.   Giving thanks is not a personality trait…it is a command from the Lord…it is obedience.

in everything give thanks;

for this is the will of God

in Christ Jesus for you. (1 Th 5:18)

Jim
