it is impossible for God to lie…(Heb 6:18)
What is a lie? The dictionary definition is: a deception in the form of an untruthful statement, especially with the intention to deceive others. Untrue statements to deceive. Sadly, although the definition helps us…we all know what lies are by experience – both with being lied to and sadly…we ourselves have lied.
We live in a world filled with lies. Lies and “half-lies” (ie half-truths) are so common, that we are not even that shocked when we uncover a lie. Disappointed, frustrated - yes…but not shocked. At this moment, we are less than two weeks until Election day. One of the disappointing things is that politics and lies almost seem synonymous. So normal is this, that for the average voter – being lied to is normal and again…not shocking.
We should wonder if this points to the days we are living in. In the days before the Global flood in Genesis, God testifies that the whole earth was filled with corruption (Gen 6:11). It was one of the marks of a world ripe for God’s judgment. Sadly, and soberly – we are in such days again.
God doesn’t lie. With the backdrop of the days we are in, when lies are so rampant…hear this again – God does not lie! He cannot! It is outside His nature!
it is impossible for God to lie…(Heb 6:18)
Take a moment and consider this great truth and wonder. We have One that we can be absolutely confident in, One that cannot lie…and that is God.
How should this truth affect us?
One - it should strongly encourage us.
we might have strong consolation (Heb 6:18)
It is interesting to consider the wording of this encouragement. Not only are we to be encouraged…but to have strong encouragement. Today, God wants you to be strongly encouraged by the fact that He cannot lie. Are you? If not, I encourage you to be, to receive strength from this today.
Two – it should cause us to trust in Him.
who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us. (Heb 6:18)
The amplified Bible says it this way: to grasp and hold fast the hope appointed for us and set before us. Simply, in such an environment of lies – we should all the more put our hope in the One who does not and cannot lie. We should find ourselves trusting Him more. Are you doing this today? Can I encourage you in this murky world we live in – to flee to Him and find refuge for your soul.
Today…I just want to encourage you – strongly – with the wonder and great truth that we have a God who does not and cannot lie. Praise God!
it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us. (Heb 6:18, NLT)
