This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you,

that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. (1 Jn 1:5)

And the light shines in the darkness,

and the darkness did not comprehend [or overcome] it. (Jn 1:5)

Light verses Darkness.  These two terms are descriptions of two very opposite things.   In the Bible, God uses these at times to describe physical realities, but far more often He uses these terms of spiritual realities.   Darkness is a picture of sin, pain, evil, suffering and more.

In our world – we are constantly confronted with darkness.  This Friday is Halloween.  Not all, but many will celebrate and toy with spiritual darkness during this holiday.  On top of that, next Tuesday is Election day.   The truth is for any that look very clearly…you will see darkness and corruption.  Corruption and darkness are so intertwined in the things we do as mankind - constantly we have darkness presented before us.

Today, can I remind you and call you to consider the wonderful and glorious light we have in the Lord.  As a side thought, I find it interesting that John 1:5 and First John 1:5 both speak so clearly about light verses darkness (which are the two verses we are considering above).  I cannot help but wonder if God did that purposefully for us to make a connection between the two.  At least it is an interesting thought J.

God is light without any darkness.

God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.

I just want you to hear that…to understand that and know that it is true.  We live in a world that is so marred by corruption, where almost all good has a mix of bad in it as well.  It can be disheartening.  Yet hear this clearly – God is light, God is good…and He has no darkness in Him at all…not even a little.  Just bask in that thought for a moment.

God’s light is shinning in the darkness.

the light shines in the darkness

Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world.” (Jn 8:12)

God has shown the light of Himself in this world…God has done this most powerfully and wonderfully by Jesus, who is the light of the world.  In a world of darkness, God is showing you how wonderful He is…through Christ.  God is sending the light of hope in Christ in this dark world.   The light is shinning…

God’s light is not understood by darkness.

the darkness did not comprehend it

It is true that darkness cannot understand the light of God and of Christ. The world does not understand.  Yet, in truth the Greek word translated “comprehend” here is probably better translated and understood as “overcome”.  Thus…

God’s light is unconquerable by darkness.

the darkness did not overcome it.

The point being that the darkness cannot nor ever will stop, hinder or conquer the light.  Darkness looses and will lose to the light of Christ.   Darkness is going away and the full light of day is coming.

the darkness is passing away, and the true light is already shining. (1 Jn 2:8)

Today, in a simple way, can I just encourage you to consider the marvelous light we have in God, the wonder of Him being light without darkness.  I call you not only to consider that…but seek to reflect His light in this dark world!

But you are a chosen …that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; (1 Pe 2:9)

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (Eph 5:8)

You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. (1 Th 5:5)

Jim
