 Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed,

Because His compassions fail not.

They are new every morning;

Great is Your faithfulness.

“The Lord is my portion,” says my soul,

“Therefore I hope in Him!” (La 3:22-24)

New beginnings – in many ways, mankind always longs for them.

Today is New Years Eve.  Tomorrow begins a New Year…2009.

  • For many, that reality holds hope that tomorrow they can begin afresh.
  • Many are making resolutions for the new year, casting in it their hopes.
  • Many long to leave behind in the close of this year- pain and sorrow.

Celebrating the New Year is not a bad thing.  Christian, there is nothing wrong about finding in this turning of the calendar challenges to begin afresh in the new year.   Yet…we need to see the real truths that surround these days.

A New Year…doesn’t really work.   There is nothing in the nature or power of the turning of the calendar that causes the pains of yesterday to be left behind or that brings us into the hopes of the future.   The New Year has no power to bring about these desires.

New Beginnings are do exist…only and yet constantly with God!   What the world longs for in New Years resolutions and hopes – is what Christians have with God…continually.

With God – there is mercy.   In fact, notice the verse

Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed…

They are new every morning;

Mercy means that God does not give us what we deserve.  In God’s mercy we find forgiveness, cleansing and washing away of pain, sorrow and guilt.   This mercy is so abundant, it is as if it was fresh and full every morning!  Wow.   Today, and every day in the Christian life…we have and can have what the world only wishes for in a New Year.

With God – there is power.

Great is Your faithfulness.

“The Lord is my portion,” says my soul,

The power of the new beginnings we have in God…is His consistent faithfulness.  He is faithful…He never fails…He never gives up.   The strength that the Christian has…is that God is our portion, allotment in life.  Today, Christian, you possess in God…want the world only dreams of in faint shadows.

With God – there is hope.  Consider the simple flow of our verses today…

His Mercies…are new every morning;

Great is Your faithfulness...

“Therefore I hope in Him!”

The weakness of most New Year’s Resolutions is that they rely on us to seek to fulfill them…and we are entirely weak.  Yet, the Christian has and can rely on God and His faithfulness.  As Jeremiah pens these words in the book of Lamentations, he reasons with us to say…if all these things are true, and they are – then therefore, because of these things – I will put my hope, confidence and life in Him..  The call is to a simple and fresh surrender to God, to place your life afresh in His hands…and discover in reality what the world only longs for in their New Year’s celebrations.

Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed,

Because His compassions fail not.

They are new every morning;

Great is Your faithfulness.

“The Lord is my portion,” says my soul,

“Therefore I hope in Him!” (La 3:22-24)
