The Lord brings the counsel of the nations to nothing;
He makes the plans of the peoples of no effect.
The counsel of the Lord stands forever,
The plans of His heart to all generations. (Ps 33:10-11)
Today, is another day in HIStory.
Perhaps you have heard the familiar quip: History is His Story.
History rightly understood, is seen as HIStory…or His Story.
History isn’t just random, chaotic or unprogressive. History has a beginning and an ending. It has a flow, that God is working through all mankind.
The counsel of men is faulty. Our ideas and understandings are so often wrong. Consider things like the fears global warming or ice ages destroying all mankind and understand thast such understandings are counsels of men. You could add to the list pages of opinions of mankind. But the Bible is clear:
The Lord brings the counsel of the nations to nothing
Yet God’s counsel is solid. His guidance and understanding is never wrong. His counsel given to us in His Word – the Bible – is what you can trust in today.
The counsel of the Lord stands forever,
The plans of men – will fail. Mankind has had intention after intention from global dominion to global peace. But all of men’s plans have and will fail.
He makes the plans of the peoples of no effect.
I think of King Nebuchadnezzar, by all accounts Biblically and historically – perhaps one of the greatest rulers men ever knew. Daniel revealed to him his place in history in Daniel 2. Nebuchadnezzar ended up rejecting that his role and kingdom would be limited, and built a statue that defied the revelation given to him in Daniel 2. God allowed Nebuchadnezzar to go through a season of near insaneness in order for him to understand that God rules over all:
… until you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men,
and gives it to whomever He chooses.” (Da 4:32)
Nebuchadnezzar does end up understanding. He makes this amazing statement about God and His reign:
For His dominion is an everlasting dominion,
And His kingdom is from generation to generation.
All the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing;
He does according to His will in the army of heaven
And among the inhabitants of the earth.
No one can restrain His hand
Or say to Him, “What have You done?” (Da 4:34-35)
Today, as another day becomes reality. Today as changes take place in our nation and around the world. It is wise to remember – God is orchestrating history to its final end. Things are right on track…and God is still at the helm. There is comfort in these thoughts nationally and personally – knowing God is working all for good. His plans – counsel and purposes - are solid.
The counsel of the Lord stands forever,
The plans of His heart to all generations.
Today, I simply call you to rest in the hand and the plans of Him who is working all history into His awesome HIStory.
Today, I simply call you to submit to His hand and plans. Submit and don’t fight His will in your life – but surrender afresh, trusting Him with big and small.
In Him also we have obtained an inheritance,
being predestined according to the purpose of Him
who works all things according to the counsel of His will
(Eph 1:11)
