They soon forgot His works;

They did not wait for His counsel (Ps 106:13)

Forgetfulness leads to Folly.

In this simple phrase is the thought I ask you to consider today.

Forgetfulness – it is a serious problem.   There is something about the heart of man that so easily takes for granted the blessings, favor and work of God.  No matter how many marvelous things God does in our lives….we can so easily take them for granted.

This Psalm speaks of  Israel following the deliverance at the Red Sea.

They soon forgot His works;

Consider for a moment all the visible manifestations of God’s work they had.   God’s presence was seen among them in the pillar of fire by night and cloud by day.  They had daily manna miraculously provided.   They saw God work in their midst powerfully, supernaturally.  Yet….so quickly they took this all for granted and did not really see the work of God among them.

It is easy to ridicule Israel for their forgetfulness.  Yet, I put to you that we are equally, if not more guilty of taking God for granted today.   We live in days where Christ has come and provided all we need.  We have the work of the Spirit present in our very lives.  We have these…and a thousand more blessings that God has worked in our lives.

We need to endeavor not to be so forgetful!   There is a great need that we seek to not miss or take for granted God’s work in our lives.  Consider just a few of the words from the Hymn “Count Your Many Blessings”.

When upon life's billows you are tempest tossed,

When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,

Count your many blessings, name them one by one,

And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.

Count your blessings, name them one by one,

Count your blessings, see what God hath done!

Can I challenge you to do this right now?   Take a moment and consider the works God has done for you and in you.   Take a moment and pray, ask God to help you see His faithful work in your life.

Forgetfulness leads to Folly.

They soon forgot His works;

They did not wait for His counsel

Because Israel forgot and took for granted all that God had done…it led them to face the future and present problems in their own strength.   They did not wait on or for the Lord, because they lost sight of how significant His work was in them.

Today, it might be happening in you.   As you take God for granted, as You take His faithful work in your life lightly – it causes you to look to your own strength, ideas and wisdom in the present situation. This is folly!    I call you today, to be one that waits on the Lord, that looks for His guidance, counsel and help.   I call you to let Him lead you.

Today, I call you NOT to be FORGETFUL, and in so doing that – to be able not to go to the FOLLY of not waiting for Him.

They soon forgot His works;

They did not wait for His counsel (Ps 106:13)

When upon life's billows you are tempest tossed,

When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,

Count your many blessings, name them one by one,

And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.

Jim
