And let the peace of God rule in your hearts… (Col 3:15)
Let peace be the umpire of your heart. What does that mean? In a simple sense, it is to this we are called in Col 3:15. Let me give you the Amplified Bible’s translation of Col 3:15
And let the peace (soul harmony which comes) from Christ rule (act as umpire continually) in your hearts [deciding and settling with finality all questions that arise in your minds, in that peaceful state]
First – what is God’s peace? Understand this, God’s peace is very different from the world’s peace. God’s peace is a peace that does not come because we understand life, or what is happening or the thousand questions of “why”. God’s peace “passes understanding”
the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding,
will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. (Php 4:7)
Further, God’s peace does not mean life is moving smoothly. Jesus lets us know that at the very moment we can know His peace, life can be totally chaotic.
These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace.
In the world you will have tribulation… (Jn 16:33)
Peace, God’s peace comes neither from understanding or from circumstances. God’s peace is described by the Amplified Bible as a “soul harmony”. It is a spiritual peace that we get in and from God. It is a peace that God gives in our hearts as we are walking with Him in His ways. It is to this peace we are called!
Second – God’s peace can be, ought to be your umpire. What is an umpire? An umpire in a baseball game calls the shots, decides what is fair, what is good or bad in a pitch. An umpire settles the issues of disagreement. Think about that for a minute, Christian. God’s peace is meant to be an umpire in your heart. God’s peace is meant to be an amazing source of guidance.
Let me give you the amplified Bible’s translation again.
And let the peace (soul harmony which comes)
from Christ rule (act as umpire continually)
in your hearts [deciding and settling with finality all questions
that arise in your minds, in that peaceful state]
Christian, today, I call you to honestly do this. Today, I call you to peace…today, I call you to let God’s peace umpire your life, your decisions and your course. Today…walk in His peace!
Jim
