And whatever you do, do it heartily,
as to the Lord and not to men (Col 3:23)
Wherever you are, be all there and be there for God.
God’s aim and desire is for you and I to be fully focused on today, living it for Him and with Him. The call in Col 3:23 is from God, to do whatever you do today, wherever you are today – as unto Him! Wherever you are, be all there and be there for God!
What other options are there?
Some live in the past. Living on past victories or mourning past failures. Yet God calls us to leave the past behind and press ahead.
… one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, (Php 3:13)
In one sense there is a need not to rest on the past or be bound by it. Further, there needs to be a solid understanding that our view of the past is unclear and often distorted.
Do not say, “Why were the former days better than these?”
For you do not inquire wisely concerning this. (Ec 7:10)
Some live in the future. Living on what they hope is coming, what they are aiming for and hoping for. Yet, to do so – neglects the present. Further, we have no solid confidence that any of us will have a future in this world. What we have is today to live for God.
Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit”; whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.” But now you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. (Jas 4:13-16)
Some live in the fantasy of what they wish today was. There is a sense that some spend their days wishing their today was different, dreaming of what they want it to be. The folly of this is that they are living in a world that does not exist, and missing the one that is right before them.
Today, I call you: Wherever you are, be all there and be there for God!
If you would embrace such a heart, it is true that there are certain things that you might have done today that you cannot do. For you cannot do sin unto God, there is no way to do evil for God’s glory. I call you away from anything that would tarnish God’s name.
Yet, that being said – you can do all the rest today, from the smallest thing for God’s glory. Consider that Jesus said a cup of water given in His name would not go unrewarded (Mat 10:42). Today, take every opportunity to be fully engaged in the present and seek to do all that you do for Him and unto Him, even if it is just extending a cup of water to another.
Today, wherever you are, be all there and be there for God!
And whatever you do, do it heartily,
as to the Lord and not to men (Col 3:23)
