Thus my heart was grieved, And I was vexed in my mind. I was so foolish and ignorant; I was like a beast before You. (Psalm 73:21-22)

When you have a bad day, God does not.

The truth is that we all have bad days, days where we are confused, discouraged, disappointed and more.  I love the honesty of the Bible in dealing with the reality of our lives!  Here in Psalm 73 – the Psalmist looks back on a bad day, a bad series of days that he had.  Notice how he describes his bad day(s).

He was off.  A grieved heart is bitter, sour and well…off.  We speak of someone in sports being “off their game”.  This speaks of being “off their heart”.

He was on edge.  The word for vexed speaks of one being “sharp”, cutting, and simply on edge.  We might even say grumpy.

He was foolish and ignorant.  His mind was not thinking clearly or seeing things rightly.

He was carnal.  He was acting like an unthinking animal, driven only by circumstances, not having a good and spiritual understanding.

Bad days…sadly it is true of most of us – we have them.

Have you had such a day?  Are you having such a day today?  As you look at those four descriptions do they describe how you feel today?   If so, hear what the Psalmist saw after the fact, as he looked back on God’s faithfulness.

Nevertheless I am continually with You; You hold me by my right hand. You will guide me with Your counsel, And afterward receive me to glory. (Psalm 73:23-24)

God never left him.  When we have bad days, we are often unaware of God’s faithful presence.  But Christian,  He has promised us that He would never leave us for forsake us.  Even on bad days…He is continually with us.

God was holding him.   God’s power and work was ongoing, even when the Psalmist was unaware of it.   God is working, He never quits, He never gives up.  On bad days, we can be unaware of it…but He is upholding us, and working in and around us.

God’s guidance was waiting.   The focus shifts here to the future, the Psalmist says God “will guide me”.   He discovered that God did not give up on him, even though he was so foolish.  He discovered God was waiting to guide him to the next step in his day and life.

God’s endgame was solid.  Heaven was and is coming.  In spite of a bad day, where thoughts of eternity and heaven may have been overshadowed – the plan of God did not change.  Heaven, glory was and is coming.

When you have a bad day…God does not

Nevertheless – in spite of how we “feel” on bad days…God is amazing!

Nevertheless I am continually with You; You hold me by my right hand. You will guide me with Your counsel, And afterward receive me to glory. (Psalm 73:23-24)

When you have a bad day…God does not

My flesh and my heart fail; But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. (Psalm 73:26)
