"Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!" As for him who lacks understanding, she says to him…(Prov 9:4 & 16)
Do you need help?
As you look at life before you, do you find yourself feeling “simple”? The word for simple in our text speaks of one who admits that he or she lacks wisdom for a decision in life. It speaks of one who fears that they don’t see clearly enough and may make a decision that leads to unwanted consequences. Today, are you feeling “simple”?
As you look at life, do you find yourself “lacking understanding”? The word in Hebrew used for “understanding” here does not just speak of knowledge, but heart. It has the idea of being concerned that one does not have the fortitude to make it through the course that is before them? Is this you today, do you need this “understanding”?
If you are “simple” and one “who lacks understanding” – Be Warned! There are two voices crying out to you with the same message! In Proverbs 9 we find this phrase “whoever is simple, let him turn in here” twice. Once in v. 4 and the second time in v.16. The problem is that the come from two very different sources. They both are calling to the simple…but with very different results!
The first voice, is the voice of wisdom calling to us to turn into it.
It calls to eat of the bread and wine it has prepared for us (v.5). This is an amazing passage the prefigures what we know today as Communion. It is calling us to Christ, to His sacrifice for us…to the cross.
It calls to us to forsake foolishness and live! This voice is calling us to go in the way of good, Biblical understanding (v.6)
Truly as this passage goes on to show, such a path is full of satisfaction – wisdom and understanding.
But again, there is a danger…there is another voice with the same appeal…
The second voice is the voice of folly- the call of sin.
Instead of the wine – this voice offers stolen water – watering our soul with that which is wrong (v.17)
Instead of the bread – this voice offers bread eaten in secret – hidden sin, hidden satisfaction (v.17).
But it goes on to tell us this path leads to death and emptiness and hell.
Today, two voices are calling to you. One to the Lord, to Jesus…and His ways….the other to sin.
It is important that you know your need – that you recognize that you and I really are simple and in need of understanding. Yet, it is so important that you realize there are two voices calling to all such that realize their need
Two voices
Two outcomes are fixed and sure.
Which voice will you listen to today….
Turn into the voice of wisdom!!
"Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!" As for him who lacks understanding, she says to him… “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
(Proverbs 9:4,10)
