"And whatever you do, do it heartily,

as to the Lord and not to men,"

(Col 3:23)

Wherever you are, be all there and there unto God.

Do me a favor and read that sentence above again…and think about it.  I honestly believe that God is calling each of us to live in a way that this sentence, and even more the verse above refers to us.  The problem for most of us is that we are tempted to live anywhere but in the present.

Many spend their days living for the future.  We can spend today, this moment – thinking and wishing for the future, living for the weekend, the vacation, the holiday, for lunch, for quitting time, for bed time and on it goes.   We seem to always be wishing away the present so we can get to the future.  Yet this is a foolish way to live.   James tells us that counting on the future is foolish, because none of us know if we have another day.   (James 4:13).   Jesus told us not to worry about tomorrow, but to live this day, this moment for God.  (Mat 6:33-34)

Some spend their days living in the past.  Minutes, hours and days are spent longing and wishing for the “past glory days” or perhaps wishing we could undo some horrible mistake of the past.  Yet all the time spent wishing we could change or live in the past is fruitless –because we cannot.  Living in the past is wasting the present.   We only have the present.

Some devalue what they are doing today.  They wish for more exciting or important jobs or even ministries.   Yet, often such reasoning is simply prideful.  Simply, God is asking us to do everything we do, today, for God.  God is calling us to be faithful, even in the small things of our lives.

Think about this for a moment – what if you really sought to do everything today, every little task and deed you do today unto God?  What would that look like?  How would that change your day?

True, such a focus would keep us from some things, from sin – because we cannot sin and please God.  So this would be good.

Yet, go further, did you know God could take pleasure in your faithfulness in the smallest areas of your life, your job or school?   It is a wonderful and real thought…it is how God wants us to live.  Consider this Proverb:

Dishonest scales are an abomination to the Lord,

But a just weight is His delight. (Proverbs 11:1)

A scale is what was used in a business to weigh a sale for one.   God tells us here that it delights Him when we do even this – a good and fair job.   Read that again…it delights Him…Wow!

I challenge you to do this very thing today.  Even begin at this very moment, whatever you are doing, whatever is before you – do it unto God.

"And whatever you do, do it heartily,

as to the Lord and not to men,"

(Col 3:23)

Wherever you are, be all there and be there unto God.

Jim
