“Be astonished, O heavens, at this …

For My people have committed two evils:

They have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters,

And hewn themselves cisterns;

broken cisterns that can hold no water."

(Jer 2:13)

It is shocking and crazy to behold how some Christians live.  That is what God says here – be astonished…amazing, shocked at this folly.  What folly?   God points out that His people make two mistakes…two horrible choices.

First – they forsake Him.  God pictures His supply for our lives as a wonderful, bubbling fountain of crystal pure water!   It is an abundant, endless and life giving soul supply.

Yet…here is the crazy thing.  God is here watching His people pull away from Him.  He is watching them distance themselves from His full, abundant and fresh supply.   It appears as a crazy thing to God, that His people would turn from Him and His supply

Second – they hew their own cisterns.    People need water to live, and in this picture – souls need a supply of “soul water” – call it hope, strength, drive or whatever – we all need it.   Because these were ignoring and pulling away from God’s supply, they had to find a different supply of “soul water”   Thus, they dug cisterns.

What is a cistern?   A cistern is a hole that the Jews would carve in the rocks to catch rain water, and even dew.  But the problem is that after the cisterns were carved - they were often found to have cracks, that would allow all the water to drain out.  This is what God likens our attempts at living life without Him to.  And even the water that remained was limited, stagnant, and scum coated.

Do you see the craziness of this choice?  Turning away from fresh, bubbling forth living water, these are living on menial, stagnant and dissipating muddy water.   Who would make such a choice????   They were…and sadly, some who are reading this today are doing the same thing.

Today – I long that you would see in a fresh way the craziness of such a choice.  To pull back and away from God…and seeking to find substance in other things – is just plain shocking.   In God, we have a Fountain System.  A continuous fresh fountain of living water! The power to live a Godly, joyful, and fulfilled life is right before you!   Today, I call you back to God’s wonderful, abundant, fresh and living supply

Jesus told those at the Feast of Tabernacles (which is being celebrated this very week on the Jewish Calendar)

"If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water." (John 7:37 38)

Don’t rely on a cistern - turn to the Lord today for all of your strength and life - and you will find Him a fountain of living waters!

Jim
