LORD, my heart is not haughty, Nor my eyes lofty.
Neither do I concern myself with great matters,
Nor with things too profound for me.
Surely I have calmed and quieted my soul,
Like a weaned child with his mother;
Like a weaned child is my soul within me.
O Israel, hope in the LORD From this time forth and forever.
(Ps 131)
What is your hope today? Hope can be defined as the feeling or certainty that things are going to work out fine – it is a trust and a confidence. As you look at life – again can I ask, where is your hope?
Today – I call you to a Humble Hope in the LORD
Humble Hope in the LORD. Biblical humility is not a demeaning or nor self deprecation. Real humility is a right understanding of who we are and what we know and what we can do. Simply put – there is so much that we don’t understand, there is so much that we don’t know and so very much that we cannot do. Real humility is a right estimation of this. I love the way this Psalm begins above – an expression of humility that admits there are great matters that are too profound for us! Many of them!
Humble Hope in the LORD – In contrast to our vast weakness, God is so far beyond us! He is all wise, there is nothing He does not understand. His thoughts are higher than our thoughts, His ways higher than our ways. We have an amazing God, who is all powerful, glorious, holy, mighty and good. We have a God who is perfect and beautiful in radiance and glory. As we rightly see our great limitations, in contrast God calls us to see His fullness. We have an great God. In your weakness, in true humility, I call you to see Him!
Humble Hope in the LORD – Again I come back to this question: What are you hoping in today? What do you trust in and lean upon for life? If it is in yourself, your understanding, wisdom or ways – it is a misplaced hope. If it is in any man or manmade system - it is a misplaced hope. Today, I call you, even as the Psalm above ends – to hope in the Lord, from this time forth and forever more. Put your hope in God today and from this day forward!
Today I call you to a Humble Hope in the LORD.
This Hope is pictured well for us in this Psalm. God pictures such a hope as a young, weaned child with his mom. Imagine the scene, a young child in his mom’s arms safe, secure and content in her embrace. The question for you is why would such a child be content or feel safe and hopeful?
- Is it because he knows how all the bills will be paid? No.
- Is it because he knows how all the national emergencies and predicaments will be worked out? No.
- Is it because he knows the course of his whole life and where he is going and how he will get there? No.
- Is he content because he understands all mysteries of the universe, of God, time, space and purpose? No.
None of these or other issues concern him– all he knows is the comfort of her warm and strong presence. There is a feeling here, that is better felt than described, a safety of being in mom’s arms as a child. It is to such a place of comfort that God calls us – into “God’s arms”, in His presence – and the hope that is found there.
Today – I call you to a Humble Hope in the LORD
Thus says the Lord: “Cursed is the man who trusts in man And makes flesh his strength, Whose heart departs from the Lord. (Jeremiah 17:5)
“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, And whose hope is the Lord. (Jeremiah 17:7)
