Matthew 5:5b
Blessed Brokenness
Series: The Beatitudes - Nov 3rd, 2005
Let me read someone’s personal journal to you
I don’t understand myself at all, for I really want to do what is right, but I don’t do it. Instead, I keep doing the very things I hate. I know perfectly well that what I am doing is wrong …. But I can’t seem to help myself… I know I am rotten through and through … No matter which way I turn, I can’t make myself do right. I want to, but I can’t. When I want to do good, I don’t. And when I try not to do wrong, I do it anyway.
Perhaps you recognize what I just read
• is a paraphrase of Paul’s words in Rom 7:15-20
• Question – could that have been your journal?
• Could those have been your words? Struggle?
• If so – you in the right place today – going to talk about how we overcome, how we can do right

Conclusion
Ultimately this is a longing for Christ - Christ in us
• John 6:35
• John 4:13-14
• John 7:37-38
• Galatians 2:20
Hudson Taylor called it the Exchanged life
Want you to know that it is real – righteousness
• Those who hunger and thirst for it – satisfied
• Takes poor in Spirit
• Takes mourning
• Takes meekness – surrender
• Then as in faith – look to Him
Do you have it? Are you walking in it?
Avoid the counterfeit – the excuse for lack of this
O God, I have tasted thy goodness, and it has both satisfied me and made me thirsty for more. I am painfully conscious of my need of further grace. I am ashamed of my lack of desire. O God, I want to want thee: I long to be filled with longing; I thirst to be made more thirsty still. Show me thy glory, I pray thee, that so I may know thee indeed. Begin in mercy a new work of love within me. Say to my soul, "Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away." Then give me grace to rise and follow thee up from this misty lowland where I have wandered so long. In Jesus' name, Amen. A. W. Tozer
Gospel
In a sense – as we reach this place in the beatitudes a perfect picture of salvation
• Begins with knowing need for God– poor in Spirit
• Then shows you your sin against God– mourning
• Then calls you to surrender to Him – Meek
• Then calls you to cry out for His salvation - gives you His righteousness – hunger and thirst
Do you have this?
• Have a great fear – that we have exchanged “decision” for “salvation”
• Salvation in the Bible is real – it is righteousness
• Today, dumbed it down to knowing facts…and is not salvation
How do you know if you are saved
• It is real – Spirit in You – working
• In one sense – know you are justified, because sanctification working in you, Sprit in You
• I cannot save you, cannot pray w/you & tell you because you have prayed that you are saved.
• You will know you are saved – because it is real.
• How works in each life – wonderfully different.
• But wonderfully real. Some emotional, rational
• Cry out till you are “satisfied”
